• How to delete a range of files

    Hi all,

A friend of mine has a Samsung tablet. The memory of 32 GB is almost
full. In the Other files folder there are a lot of pdf documents with a
big size. I want to delete all of them. But how can I do that? When I
select a file, it opens with a pdf reader.
Any idea how I can select a whole range of files?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    With best regards,

I'm guessing you're tapping a file, so it gets opened. What if you
long-tap the file to see if it gets selected without opening?

    Did a search to find:

    https://youtu.be/Z3CMhtqmPDA?t=61

Describes long-tapping to get select options. At the bottom of the
screen, there is a "Delete All" button. After long-tapping a file to
select it, you can tap other files, but just tap them. I don't know how
you can select multiple files in Samsung's My File. In the file manager
on my phone, after long-tapping a file, I cannot select multiple files,
so I have to [short-]tap other files UNLESS there is a "Select all"
    button

You don't say, but when you're "In the Other files folder", you're
probably in the 'My Files' app (i.e. similar to Windows File Explorer).

If so, then don't tap on a file name but do a long-press on a
filename. Now you will get a small circle before all the filenames. You
can select each file by tapping in the circle, which will put a 'V'
    (selected) in there.

There is also an 'All' circle at the top-left, so you can select all
    files in one go.

I am posting with a Chrome tablet (Lenovo 10e) that also has only 32GB of
storage. My problem was solved by using online storage. I keep 100GB. And
of course another advantage is that the online storage is available to all
my devices for either downloading or cloud use. I find it very useful. You
might suggest it to your friend...

I use the same concept. Devices are only the endpoints of a larger hub-and-spoke-system. I will never again accept a dependency on devices
that can be stolen or otherwise destroyed. That is also why I do not
accept the storage of our valuable data in the same location where I
live or the devices are located.

You need to tap and hold to select a file. Once selected you can (short)
tap other files to select them.

I don't use the default file manager, but I use Total Commander: <https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ghisler.android.TotalCommander&hl=en>

You may find that easier to work with. In Total Commander you select a
file with tap+hold, then you can go down, tap again, and then all files
between the first and the second are selected.

Others have already suggested to the OP that the procedure depends on what
file explorer he's using, as each may have a different method of selection.

I've tested every free ad free google-free file explorer ever suggested on
this newsgroup, where plenty will allow the OP to select multiple files.

Even so, perhaps the easiest way to select files is to use the Windows File Explorer GUI, if the OP has access to a Windows PC.
    a. Plug the phone into the PC
    b. On the PC, open up the directory on the phone
    c. On the PC, select & delete the PDF files

If the OP wants to stay on Samsung, the default behavior of tapping a file often opens it instead of selecting it. Here's how the OP can select and
    delete multiple PDF files efficiently:

    Use the My Files App
    a. Open the "My Files" app (Samsung's built-in file manager).
    b. Navigate to Internal Storage > Other (or wherever the PDFs are stored).
    c. Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
    d. Choose "Select items" or "Edit" mode.
    e. Now tap each PDF you want to delete - or tap and hold the first one,
    then continue tapping others.
    f. Once selected, tap the trash icon to delete.

Thank you all for your help. It's clear to me what I have to do. I will
help her tomorrow. It's gonna work this time, I guess.
    I'll come back at it.
