Title: Thorough, Well-Written and Well Done

Review: Those of us who are devoted to the Jack Benny radio programs finally have the book we deserve. "Jack Benny and the Golden Age of American Radio Comedy" stands alone as a no-nonsense, no nostalgia overview of Jack's radio oeuvre. It manages to straddle the divide between too little and too much information, offering modest interpretation, and mostly letting the reader make his or her own inferences.
The writing is mature, the sentences are intelligent, and the writer reserves her first person involvement for the final paragraphs of, where it is most welcome. Even the chapters on race and gender (which I was dreading) are well-done, combining facts about the Benny show and its reception with relevant social history vignettes.
Ms. Fuller-Seeley is not a gushing fan. She estimates Benny and his work at what seems to me to be the correct level of cultural importance.
The background she provides on the early Canada Dry and General Tire programs (1932-34) motivated me to re-visit the scratchy and sometimes inaudible recordings of those shows. It was well worth the effort - many of the gags are great, and Frank Parker was probably Benny's best - though far from funniest - tenor.

Title: Misses the Fun

Review: Any book-length treatment of the Jack Benny Program is welcome and worth a look. There is much detail here about the Program's history and the careers of Benny and his cast, but know that this is a very academic treatment. It often reads like a PhD thesis. The result is an interesting book, but missing is the sense of fun that made--and still makes--the Jack Benny Program so enjoyable.

Review: I like to think I know a bit about standup comedy and comedians. I'm too young to have heard Jack Benny on the radio and only have seen the TV show in reruns. However, I'd learned about Jack through many other sources. The material in this book (which concentrates on the radio show) delves into every facet of it: the advertisers, race issues, the writing, the casting, the broadcasters/negotiations...oh MY).. It's really terrific. I'm not even finished with the book, but it's already proven itself as an amazing resource about Jack's radio show. I recommend it highly.

Title: In-Depth examinations of a few topics of an Icon's Career

Review: This isn't really a biography (lots of other places you can get that) but an excellent in-depth examination of a few important topics in the life and career of Jack Benny. There's a chapter on Mary Livingston, two on Eddie Anderson and other chapters on Benny's relationships with his writers and his sponsors. Hopefully this book will do well and Ms. Seeley can write another book with chapters dealing with Phil Harris, Dennis Day and the multiple other topics that can mined from Benny's career. I bought this book after hearing about it on Buck Benny's podcast and I'm glad I did.
