Star Trek Beyond My First Review

I'm not an experiend or rather good reviewer but let me give my impression of Star Trek Beyond after seeing it in IMAX 3D at the Lowes Mutiplex first showing at 10 AM Friday the 22nd.

First of all the deaths of both Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin were noted in the credits, a good gesture seeing that they had less than a month to pay tribuite to Anton. Who could have not been touched by that?

After getting over about the first 15 minuets where it seemed that it was obivious that we were watching what I have come to call the parallel universe of Trek, it was more like what we expected from Trek. And if you could forget that it was a reboot of the universe then it seemed like a good 'ol Trek Movie with good action, adventure and comedy. It was interesing to see McCoy and Spock together and Spock not only lets out a chuckle that surprises Bones but also uses a profinity, BS, in its full form as a retort to something that
Bones says. This brings light to a critical moment where they are trying to get out of a bad situation, after Kirk decides that they are the only two that can handle the situation he puts them in. This is part of the scene that
is shown on TV in the teaser where Spock beams away and McCoy is left alone.

The critics reviews said that Anton was under used for his talent. I did
not find this to be true. There were many scenes where he is front and
formost doing "his job" and following crictial orders given by Kirk.

Uhura also plays a big part in this especially toward the end and Zoe Saldana plays the part well and proves that Uhura is not just someone who just "opens hailing frequencies" and looks good in a uniform. Finally John Cho as Sulu still presents himself as a member of the crew who will move up in the ranks like we expeted him to do in Trek Prime.

Lastly the addition of Jaylah played by Sofia Boutella was a nice surprise and something Kirk does at the end makes me think that we will see her again. Perhaps if they do not replace the Chechov character Jaylah will become part of the crew. It all remains to be seen how they treat the death of Anton Yelchin and if they recast his character Checkov. Look for a muted tribuite to both Lenoard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin in the beginning in a scene with Kirk and Bones though it does play well as part of the movie. I would call this an insider's moment. I don't know if this was a planned scene or just a happenstance that turns out to be a "moment".

The movie is ripe with action and adventure. This one is more planet bound than space bound, though there are the expected space battles and space ships that you would expect to see in Trek, but not necessarrly JUST the Enterprise.

There is much to see and take in, and if you are truly into Trek you will proabably want to go again to start to take it all in. With lots of action
and many new characters, and situations to take in it is hard to take it all in, in one sitting.

The 3D was done well with good depth, and if you have a chance to see it in 3D I would recommend it and further in IMAX for the ultimate visual and sound experience.

On the scale of one to ten I would give this 8.5. This is one I'll be waiting for on Blu-ray special edition. I just hope they issue it in 3D.

A final thought, something that I have noted on other venues, both Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto at their age are dead ringers for Shatner and Nimoy when in character. This has always amazed me.
