• Rewatching Voyager

From Stephen Atkins@1:2320/100 to All on Mon Jun 1 09:00:02 2015
Hello all. Up here in Canada, Space (a TV channel) is playing all of Voyager and TNG. They have been doing this now for a few years. In the last few months I've been watching Voyager while eating breakfast. I know Voyager was considered the bastard child of Trek but as I've been rewatching it, I'm finding it really not that bad. Don't get me wrong it has it's fair share of bad episiods just like the rest. Janeway to the rescue can get a bit old sometimes, and personally any episiod that revolves around the Holodeck are just bad.

What do others think about Voyager?

Voyager grew on me -- I didn't like the Kes/Neelix story, but as it
went on, I liked the storylines about adjusting to life in the delta
quadrant. Year in Hell was a great story to me, on par with Best of
    Both Worlds in TNG.

I always liked it. I thought the theme music set it up well and the idea of a long journey with the hope of getting home one day was a good one.

Seven of nine added a bit of sex appeal while the doctor was my favourite character. Not to spoil things for you but I always felt the ending could
have been treated a little better than it was.

    Where are you up to?

I've seen all of the episodes before, just rewatching it since it's on in the mornings. I on S05 E22 where the Doctor teaches Seven on dating rituals. Over
all a good character growth episode.

I think the one thing that bothered me the most about how it ended wasn't the final episodes but the one where they leave Neelix behind. Personally I would have had Janeway take all the other Tilaxians back with them. While I was never a fan of Neelix, he was a pretty big part of the crew.

Nice to have some discussion about Trek again. Even if we don't have anything new to talk about :)

The "Year of Hell" was probably the best two episiods in the series. Kirkwood Smith is a great sci-fi actor. I'm like you with the Kes/Neelix story but like
I said in my other post, leaving Neelix behind was a big let down. Never did like the Kes character. She didn't seem to ever have any flaws. At least in the last couple of seasons Seven's character grew more.

I've only watched a couple of the episodes and so far they are quite good.
The stories are good so far. It is sometimes a little hard to get used to the new people playing Kirk, Spoke and the rest but really they do a pretty good job of it.

Yes the first and second series were the best IMHO. Both had their endering
and annoying bits but were substantive enough in their own right to be rewarded with a legion of fans.

Personally I think all of the different series have their positives and negatives. TNG suffered through two seasons of repeats from TOS. DS9 was good
and original but had very long story arcs that if you missed some episodes you
could get lost. Voyager had Janway as a one women solve all problems. It over came that in the last three seasons. Enterprise was really good but suffered from season three and four being nothing but the Xindi. So like I say
I enjoyed them all and they all had their own problems.

Now the new movies are another question all together. While I like the actors playing the TOS crew, it lacks the same dynamic that all the TV and original movies have. That and the lense flares are almost blinding.

Other listen in on this, please feel free to jump in with your own thoughts and
    comments.

Its interesting we seem to be allowed to use a geo bypass tool to view Netfilx USA if we want over here and apparently it's not illegal. Something
to do with being allowed to use tech and tools that lawfully bypass regional
restrictions... like the multi play/zone DVD players.

So that's a long winded way of me saying I have looked at your offering, USA
and NZ... funny enough a major difference between NZ and USA versions is that
the USA version offers all the TV eposiodes of Star Trek!

We can do the same thing here in Canada. I had a USA netfix account for awhile
but dropped it as the only things they had that we didn't I wasn't interested in or could get else where legally.

I did know that about Ethen Phillips. It was about 5 years ago, my wife and I went to a Star Trek Con in Calgary (we lived there). They had Ethen, Robert Picardo, Marina Sirtis, and a few other minor actors who where on the show and some other sci-fi shows. At the banquette we where able to spend close to a half an hour just talking with all three of them about their time on the shows.
They even did a few singing numbers. It was a good time. Back then that con was really pretty small. I think there where less then 100 people at the banquette so it was pretty easy to get close up with the actors.

To bad the con folded the next year. They just couldn't get space to hold it.

I thought Voyager could get a bit corny at times with some of the jokes and dialogue,
but overall I enjoyed it. I don't mind the holodeck episodes much - In fact, those
were always some of my favorites (as well as the holodeck episodes in TNG). Of
    the
holodeck episodes, I particularly liked the ones with Fair Haven.

Overall, I thought some of the funniest episodes in Voyager were the ones revolving
around the doctor - Particularly, when he implemented the Emergency Command Hologram,
the one where he became very popular on a planet for singing opera, and when the
captain sent him to the alpha quadrant onto the other Starfleet ship and he interacted with a newer holographic doctor.

I think this will be my 5th time through voyager now. The one thing I do like about it (and DS9) is that it doesn't really rehash TNG or OS stories. Granted
there are only so many sci-fi stories out there so they will redo them some. It's the characters that make them good. That's what I liked about the first seasons of Voyager. It wasn't all about Janeway and 7of9. The later seasons really focused to much on those two characters.

That's where you and I differ is in the holodeck eps. I never did like those even in TNG. I like the idea of a holodeck and it should get some screen time,
but to center an episode around them just wasn't my thing.

The Doctor (Joe as he names him self) is a great character and show a lot of growth through out the series. I actually met Robert Picardo at a con one year. Seemed like a really down to earth guy but was very passionate about his
craft. At the dinner he did a skit with Marina Sirtis, John de Lancie, Ethan Phillips and Chase Masterson.
You could tell how much he enjoys acting. Even for only 75 people he put is all in to it. Ethan Phillips was pretty cool also. He didn't get in to it as much but was still very comedic. Chase Masterson did a song and dance number and was doing kicks in to the air. Funny thing is, it was my wife that pointed
out to me that you could see her underware in those kicks. She even got a picture (and no I won't post it).

Just some random thoughts as I remember them.

That's pretty cool. I was thinking about going to my local Comic Con several weeks ago because Wil Wheaton, Nichelle Nichols, and Walter Koenig were there, but I ended up having some other things going on that weekend. Would be cool to meet one of the Star Trek actors.

I would really suggest going sometime. I was able to take the family to the Calgary Entertainment Expo a few years ago when they had the entire TNG cast there. We where able to sit in on a bunch of panels but didn't get a chance to
meet any of them. They all wanted at least $25.00 for a signature.

Sorry for being so long between emails. Been a little busy around here.

Voyager grew on me -- I didn't like the Kes/Neelix story, but as
it went on, I liked the storylines about adjusting to life in
the delta quadrant. Year in Hell was a great story to me, on par
with Best of Both Worlds in TNG.

I find the series > Star Trek Continues < it look interesting
    only 4 episodes are available.

I've only watched a couple of the episodes and so far they are quite
    good.
The stories are good so far. It is sometimes a little hard to get used to the new people playing Kirk, Spoke and the rest but really they do a pretty good job of it.

Ya good Actor, When you broke the Glass , They are Fine
to bad can not get more episodes

... I call things as I see them; If I didn't see them, I make them up!
