• Snow and Amtrak

From Conklin@1:2320/100 to All on Mon Jan 26 15:55:50 2015

Amtrak has posted that it keeps diesels in the NE in case the electrity were
to go off during this winter's storm.

That got me wondering: did RRs in the past prepare better for snow than
today? I remember the large rotary plows. Are they still in use? Besides solar plows, does Amtrak have any way of clearing snow?

The NYC Transit Authority and the LIRR have a few of these:

This one is at the Rockaway Park yard in Queens.

Thanks for the picture. How often do they use the snow blower?

When needed. The TA also runs extra trains on the open cut lines. If
you haven't been following this winter in NYC, all of the MTA systems
were closed down by 11:00PM Sunday 1/26. the storm came up the coast
about 50 miles to the east and only the outer part of Long Island got
hit with the predicted heavy snow.

But the following week there was a snow/ice/snow storm that for which
they didn't shut down and a #7 train got stalled on icy third rails and
    trains got caught behind it.

Boston borrowed two of them for the last storm. They had a picture of
one of them on the local TV news.

Boston still hasn't recovered from this year's unusually heavy snow. The most recent big storm was on Sunday 2/15.

It took until yesterday to get all the subway lines back in service. For a reason that was never explained, they needed to hire people off the street to dig out the Braintree branch by hand. But peak train frequencies are still below normal, supposedly
due to DC traction motor failures.

The commuter rail is in even worse shape. Its regular schedule isn't known for

being frequent, but they had to issue a special reduced schedule for last week and this week, with about a third of trains cancelled. Even so, they've had many *additional*
unplanned cancellations and hour+ delays due to locomotive, signal, and switch failures.

Outside locomotives are being leased, but it will be at least another week until they arrive.

Boston's commuter rail is still on the reduced schedule, with very minor incremental improvements to a few lines. And there's no sign of the leased locomotives.

I'm still wondering what kind of equipment Amtrak has for clearing snow,
    except the solar plow.
