• mbfido: error converting encoding - help anyone?

From Niels Haedecke@2:240/8002 to All on Tue Jan 1 15:49:01 2019
    Hi there,
it looks like mbfido on my system has a problem with emails (smtp) that are encoded in CP437:

    chartran_init(IBM437, Undef): iconv_open(Undef, UTF-8) error: Invalid
    argument

mbfido then exits with a SIGSEV and thus blocks all mail processing until I manually remove or "zero" the mbox files in the user's home directory.

This only happens with email, not echo- or netmail.

Does anyone know how to fix this issue? It seems like iconv is unable to work the "Undef" source encoding. But the original message is in CP437.

    Kind regards,
    Niels

    Hello Vince,
I'm very sorry for posting the advert in this echo. I did not want to cause any
trouble and will make sure this is not going to happen again. I promise!

As for the mbfido problem, I found out that this only happens if you have set your "internet mail and news" in mbsetup set to "No internet" which, in
turn, makes mbse assume that you are using UUCP for mail transport.

So this raises the question wether the error comes from a bug in mbfido or from
    some missing/wrong UUCP setting.

And just in case you wondered: no, I am not using UUCP and do not plan to use it. My intention is to use MBSE with postfix (smtp) but I've come across this issue while trying to get email work.

I assume you are referring to menu 1.12 setup ?

Here I do use it to pick up some usegroups with 13 set to Own maildomain, 16 = NNTP feed

1.2 set as 2 my public email address as gmail.com
1.3 as my email user for 1.2. but these are more for the automated msgs that are issued on receiving new files.

I suggest you follow the recommendations as per the manual see page 20 under 1.12 which says set to 'no maildomain' which will use SMTP or as in my case
own maildomain as I have a permanent internet connection.

and yes I also use postfix but that is for internal mail to ensure all system generated msgs get to me which I read using my normal email client
thunderbird - note that I use golded for echos and netmails.

Yes I could change this even using thunderbird for fido but cannot be bothered to work out how to.

So this raises the question wether the error comes from a bug in

My recommendation would be keep email processing seperate from fido but I do not read fido every day but read emails multi time per day so I suppose I should consider setting up thunderbird but there again I have other stuff to do
on the system such as software development and manual writing :)
