Title: Irish Coffee Soda Bread
Categories: Breads, Dairy, Booze
Yield: 9 Servings
2 c All-purpose flour; more for
- dusting
2 c Whole-wheat flour
1/4 c Packed dark brown sugar
1 1/2 ts Kosher salt
1 ts Baking soda
4 tb Chilled unsalted butter; in
- 1/2" cubes
1 1/2 c Buttermilk
1/4 c Irish whiskey
3 tb Instant espresso powder
1 lg Egg; lightly beaten
Heat the oven to 375A°F/190A°C.
In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle, whisk
both flours with the sugar, salt and baking soda to
combine. Add the butter and mix on medium-low speed until
the butter is the size of peas.
In a large measuring cup, whisk the buttermilk with the
whiskey, espresso powder, and egg until smooth. With the
stand mixer on low speed, pour the buttermilk into the dry
ingredients and mix just until the dough comes together.
Scrape the dough onto a lightly floured work surface, form
into a ball, and then transfer to a parchment paper-lined
baking sheet. Using a serrated knife, cut a cross into the
top of the dough ball and bake until the bread puffs and
is dark golden brown on the outside, 50 to 55 minutes. Let
the soda bread cool completely before slicing.
Serves 8 - 10
