    Hi David!

You can also try to revive this one ;)
I will not try this :)

I think you just did ;))

I am currently playing with my pi-star DMR hotspot.
They have added POCSAG capabilities recently.
Will try it out when I am back from my vacation.
Oh, may be able to catch up on DMR (4254039)

I am not using it too much.
But who knows ... maybe we bump into each other.
    (DMR ID 2321042/2163045)

I never played around with POCSAG, I hope you have good fun!

    Indeed I have ;)

I want to buy Alphapoc Pagers, but they are sold out and will come back in some
    weeks.
There is also a chinese seller for another POCSAG pager, but it will cost basically the same ... so I will stay with alphapoc.

But I am sure we can help you.

I'm familiar with POCSAG as a user and scanner monitor. The fire

The system I described is for emergency service use, it's internal to the emergency services - i.e. between dispatch and members, with some degree of member to member messaging possible. From what I understand, there's almost 200 transmitters spread across the state, simulcasting the traffic on the same frequency, so my pager works anywhere within the state.

That's always a good strategy. I had a look at the AlphaPOC site and saw some nice options. Now if I can get a local POCSAG paging system in the house working, and have it programmable, so I can use scripts to send customised pages, it would be very useful to me. :)

I'm on DMR as well, I have an OpenSpot.

I never played around with POCSAG, I hope you have good fun!

I'm familiar with POCSAG as a user and scanner monitor. The fire service uses it for alerting members to incidents, and I have a pager for that. I can see value in a local pager for ham use, especially as I am not always able to leave a rig running.

    I am using a Hytera/Tytera/(shi) 380 with a customized firmware.

    Same here.
    I also have a RD-5R from Baofang.
It is also quit OK ... (do not confuse with DM-5R that does not support DMR Tier II and hence is useless)

do you get POCSAG signal via some satellite subscription or can anyone send and receive those for free?

    No.
    They are using RF transmitters.

A lot of echo conferences are quiet these days but you never
know who's lurking unless you key up. ;-)

Sounds like the local repeaters... ;-) I turn the mobile on most of the time when I'm in between job sites (I work IT for a school district) and most of the
time it's quiet. Sometimes I'll key up but I know if others are scanning they might miss me too. I always wonder if no one is there or if everyone is like me
and waiting to see if someone ELSE is there. :-)

DMR is the cheapest of the DV modes to get into, as there's a few budget priced radios around that apparently work reasonably well. I got mine for the best price of all - won 2 DMR HTs in a Facebook promotion/competition. :)

I'm 50 and the vast majority of hams in the local club are older than me. There are a handful of younger ones around too. I'm also rather unusual for a ham, being physically active as well. My idea of "radiosport" is not sitting around racking up points in a contest, but something more like ARDF. :) I do hope we can get more younger hams, there's a lot of knowledge and experience in our club that needs to be passed on, before it's too late.
