    All major distributions are "good", you can't say in general one is "better" than the other! ;)

    If you are a linux newbie have a look at linuxmint. It's based on debian and ubuntu, but with a focus on ease of use.

    It does not make a lot of difference, as all are quit good.

    Ubuntu is more modern and comes with a nicer GUI.

    Debian is more stable (ie. older packages) and in my viewpoint geared more towards servers.

    Depends ... from my point of view the default Debian GUI is worse.
    There is also Kubuntu, Ubuntu with KDE instead of Gnome.

    Sure ... but this does not change the fact that Ubuntu has more emphasis on a "nice" GUI and it has much more recent packages (higher version numbers).
