In my younger drinking daze I found gin and tonic to be the best mouth cleanser when eating hot peppers as well as extremely hot and spicey foods. Of the above quoted 'cures', I found milk to work the best, although not as good as gin and tonic.
I've never smoked or drank in my life
As for smoking, the only thing I want smoking is the food on the
dinner plate...or at least steaming.

There is always smoked salmon. I haven't had any of that for awhile
despite the fact there are salmon in the Strait just a hop, skip and a jump from where I sit as I type this reply. I believe think any of
them are smoked at the moment though.
if they are jumping around in the Strait themselves

I've never seen them jumping but I know they are there since every now
and then one of the locals manages to hook a few and I hear and/or see
the results. From what I've heard up near Campbell River, which is
north of here, is the place to be if salmon is what you want. Way
back when, John Wayne had a 'boat' (more yacht-ish I thought) up there
and was known to show up often to salmon fish.
I do like to eat salmon, though
