I was wondering where other tidbits of info might have been being
strewed... :) I wasn't positive it was you in Survnet, as you were
using an alias, but I thought I recognized your style, and your origin
line... ;)
Yeah I used to bother to try to keep the alias and the real name separate, but that little security thing that had me concerned...
Well I learned as a result of that that bothering to try to keep
those profiles separated was pretty much doomed to failure, so why bother. I've learned to not quite be so loose with my flapping
gums now, though. I've been accused of distinctive style before. ;)
If you are interested in cooking or food in general, there's
COOKING and HOME_COOKING... good folks there, with overlap between
the two echos.. There's also MEMORIES, where the chat tends to be
more general, but supposed to be at least generally tilted towards
reminiscing... again, good folks there... and new blood always
welcome... :)
I will actually have to add those *scrawls in the to-do notebook as
the RAM on the computer is swapping badly already*. I need to find
some recipies that incorporate more veggies that my son will eat
sometime soon here before his growth gets stunted from munching on nothing but carbs when I'm not looking. The diabeetus could be strong
in this one! Gotta try to steer him away from that.
A little bit of reminiscing might not be the worst idea, so long as
I stay on the beaten path, too. *grin*
There's also WX_TALK, for talking about all sorts of weather...
tends to be quiet, kinda like here... ;)
Oh I'm active there every now and then. At least I think I am. If nothing else I read. I post bits about solar activity being tied to weather in one of the echoes, can't remember for sure if it's that
one or not.
I've never really seen the point of using the alias... unless one was thinking it would shield some bogus persona... But then I've almost always been posting in echos where one's real name was important, like genealogy, where the whole point was to connect with real people who
might be your distant cousins, working on the same ancestral lines as
you are... ;) And it's better to say only things you don't mind being remembered, whether in face-to-face or in some electronic media... or
even old fashioned snail mail.. :) Of course, since I'm in an environment where sometimes people are indeed using aliases (some areas more than others), I've also honed some skills in figuring out who was
who anyway... :)
If you do check out the cooking echos (both Fidonet), be sure to stick around for a while to get answers for your questions... I've seen too
many dip a toe in and not stay long enough to see that people have answered them... it might take a few days, like other Fido echos... ;)
But you can ask for specific types of recipes... and expect that you may well be inundated, so be prepared to capture them for use later... :)
The subjects there are quite diverse... from Old Time Radio (OTR) to trains (model and actual), to what things were like when we were growing up, to ham radio, to weather, and back and forth and all around again... some health issues, some small talk... It's like sitting around the old pot-bellied stove on our cracker barrels... ;) And cooking is like pulling up a chair to the kitchen table to talk about food and cooking
and all... ;)
I don't remember seeing you there (certainly not recently)... maybe it
was a weather echo for one of the other nets...? I was only mentioning Fidonet echos... since those are the ones I know the best. Dovenet I lurked in from time to time in the past, but haven't even done that recently at all... One of the bbses I use regularly happens to have a
few nets available, and I've been lurking in the general chat echoes for those, just to get an idea of what they are like, but haven't seen any reason to join in...
I moved the rest of the message to a new one, as this was getting pretty large... ;)

You know now that I think about it I think that solar stuff was posted in BAMA or Fringe Theory talk or whatever it's called. I've posted some solar stuff in the HAM radio echoes, too, where the solar weather
updates go, but I've not received a whole lot of talk back on those
areas yet. I lurk in many areas where I'll jump in if given an appropriate opportunity. ;)

things in my early teens, I thought that maybe it was a shield. Like I've alluded to before, I had a little naivety on my side. When that
started to crumble, it was more like a badge of honor.. I'd been a
[very briefly] published hacker for a bit, and I'd gained a little bit
of repute with some of the alias-only BBS communities that I'd been a member of. It was the fantasy of being an alias-known hacker that kept me going in it for so long. Not sure why I even still really have it, now, but I don't really bother to keep it separate... Except for a limited extent against my professional persona... Though anybody who knows enough to delve into fido and the other nets would learn right quick where the pair-up is at.
I've never been too terribly good at matching text styles to
posters, at least when they're trying to be dubious about it. Never
been looking in networks where I was looking for IRL people, either. I guess I've always thought (and found) that the aliased people I knew would give me their names one day if they decided I was decent enough
to meet up. Lo and behold I have found quite a few that way, and some
of them have, indeed, become my best friends and a few that've gone
above and beyond have helped me in some of the most desperate stretches of my life before.

I kind of the same. I guess what it needs is for me to come across a
good conversation about XYZ and then feel like I have something to contribute to it, in order to motivate me to post.
I also think that given the levels of activity are somewhat low
overall in a number of the echoareas my BBS carries, it's nice to me
able to post and help grow the traffic levels in the echo.
Exactly. Did you get my reply to you about WX_TALK...? I don't think I've seen it leave this bbs... sent it last night... I can repost... :)
Other than getting behind, and/or not checking DADS...? ;) Kidding aside, hopefully it had actually made it to you... there is always that possibility, that it didn't.
Also, the aliases were definitely more part of the teen scene... and in certain networks... I just never bothered, except in one local message area that was somewhat a role-playing area... taking on personas to go with the theme of the bbs... :)

was aware of in my area for a _very_ long time, was alias only. It really got the concept to stick. I was always pretty fantasy oriented though, too. Not so much in actually RPGing, but more in daydreams and the like. Having a 'hacker alias' was always something that stuck
close to home for me.

At least your weather probably will cooperate for that... ;)Well there's been nothing but rain in the forecast, but looking
outside right now you wouldn't be able to tell. It's absolutely beautiful.
I think that after I get some cleaning done today it's
going to be time to take the little man and get out to some of the 'beachish' areas that've been recommended around here. I'll probably check out forest park then, tomorrow. Forest right in the middle of
the city; you can't beat that. It's actually big enough to get lost
in and not be able to see the skyscrapers at all, too.
I've got to make sure that I'm getting some time outside; cabin fever
is absolute murder right now. Even if it's raining I'm pretty sure
that at least the forest park trip will be done. Just need to treat
my son's boots with some saddlesoap and polish first, to make sure they're nice & rain resistant.
Hopefully by now you have received that second message... I did tryI got it. Which leads me to wonder... am I replying to this one a second time? Eeeek!

The Sysops worst nightmare...a massive system crash. :( Been there,
done that...which reminds me...I need to make another data backup. :P
I got my start in BBSing on one that was run by the Computer Science Department at the University Of Arkansas At Little Rock. That's where
I first met Janice Harvey...who would become my wife many years later.
If that BBS is still in existence, it's for the computer science users now. As best as I can tell, my BBS is the only one left in Arkansas.
I thought I had a file on the BBS with the program that I ran "The
World's Smallest BBS" on my Radio Shack TRS-80 Model 100 laptop, but
could not locate it this morning. I guess I have to dig into an older backup to find it...or I might be able to Google it.
We get that, too... nothing but rain in the forecast, but look out the

I wish that was Arkansas' weather...but we're in the midst of our
spring Tornado Season now, and the BBS ends up being offline more than online, to protect from lightning damage.

There may have been others equally small, in similar setups... ;)

I did find the file...somehow, the FILES.BBS description got skewed.
So, I renamed the file, and updated the FILES.BBS description, and all
is well.

We come to the hobby from different places... :) I came for genealogy,Yeah I was definitely a naive kid who'd gotten into coding
where real names are the lifeblood of the area... :) Games (mostly
word types or trivia) were an addition... as was getting somewhat
involved in messaging in the local areas, getting to know the other
users and the sysop better. It helped that the sysop of that early

beforehand and had really romanticised dreams from reading the book 'Hackers' by Steven Levy and wanted to change the world through freedom of information and coding. The persona was the really interesting
aspect to it. Struggling to have a life with more meaning in a pre-portioned society, I guess, at least that's what it felt like at
the time.
'Course I spent plenty of time with the online gaming, as I
got telecommunications ability and I found that now I had software for the computer that I'd salvaged and no longer had to write my own. It's kind of a shame, really. I would've come a lot farther with my programming and sysadmin skills probably if I would've kept that hobby going as strong through my teens as it first started in my pre-teens.
I didn't really resume it in force until almost my mid-twenties, and
even then it was only my minor, while my major was in partying.
The first couple of boards that I was on, as far as local dialups,
didn't really have that sense of community so much. I guess they were really indicative of the culture in North Dakota, now that I reflect on it a little bit. It was when I first got some cracked accounts to
access major online BBSes (ie ISCA BBS) that I first started to feel a real sense of community. There weren't any people in my community who responded very well to my sense of repression fighting for outlet...
Going against those grains instead of just taking what was handed to
you in play was kind of frowned against. Nobody could understand that
a kid with problems might be a product of parents with problems... I don't know, I could write a million page essay on all of that crap, but it's really neither here no there anymore. It taught me to be a better father, that's all that should really matter at this point. Well that and to fight to find things that can help me to keep those haunting nightly revisitation hours under control where the demons of the past
try to pour back out at me. ;)
There was some of that here, too. And for some, I'm sure it was aHeh. I think I've probably made that mistake a few times myself. I think that the whole atmosphere of online interaction can be really
similar lifesaver as for you. :) I remember one teen boy I spent some
intensive time in chat on one bbs (he'd started by trying to "hit" on
me, until I told him I had a son already out of college, at which point
he responded by asking for advice on how to deal with his parents)...
great for kids in that situation, where they're repressed and kept
from normal socialization by parents or whatever cause.
Unfortunately I've seen the opposite, too. It doesn't help much that
the internet has been so popularized at this point that it doesn't
really require a sense of community in the discussion boards or
anything of the sort. I don't think quite as many people experience
the original senses of community that were so helpful to people in my position when they were younger, now-a-days.
Though no doubt the reblogging and soul dumpings
on facebook, diaspora, tumblr, and [maybe even] twitter spurts still serve the same purpose. It's just so much more likely to get lost in
the flood. Plus the newer media makes it a lot easier for people to
just spend their time reblogging and 'liking' the different content
that other people put up, instead of spending time in really meaningful interactions. Kind of reminds me of people sewing band patches and
other people's quotes onto their clothing so that they can be an 'individual'. *looks guiltily at bathrobe emblazoned with many band patches and other designs*
I hope that I can roll out this shell that I'm working on to them
soon here so that I can give back a little bit to the community
that gave me so much.
A nice repayment.. :)I'm just sad it's taking so much longer than I thought it would.
Such is the curve for projects of this size though, I guess. Well,
that, and I'm hampered a bit because of the fact that I've never coded with frameworks, never coded with testing, never learned any decent software engineering techniques. I've only worked on my own code, and that's bitten me in the bum a bit. Especially since I've had somebody else contribute good portions of work to this project, now, and I'm having trouble getting up to speed on the flow of their code in order
to fix it where it's broken with recent additions. Regardless, I hope some of them appreciate it once I iron out these last 3 bugs that are keeping me from putting it up public.
Rochester always has seemed to have a good sense of community, on many levels... bbsing being only one of them... back in the day, with a
number of good bbses to choose from, there wasn't much rivalry (and what there was was rather good-natured at that) and there was a lot of cooperation... There's less of that now locally on the bbs scene, but
with telnet and all, the community just widened out globally.. :)
It's good to find good lessons in the bad things of the past... :) And then to let the demons loose, to not torment you any more... :)
It didn't bother me... I just figured his reasoning was, any female on
the scene must be young, "old ladies" wouldn't be interested... <G> And of course, there's no visual clues as to age... :)
I'd tend to go along with you on that. And I suspect that some of that lack of real community is what encourages the somewhat resurgance of the bbs scene lately... :)
[grinning] I suppose there's a place for that... <G> I have to agree that what exists nowadays in social media is generally a poor substitute for real interaction. I'm sure there are some pockets of it, but the medium doesn't really encourage it... it tends to be pretty impersonal..
iron out these last 3 bugs that are keeping me from putting it upI'm sure it IS a learning curve... :) Sounds like you'll manage ok
public.
