From Rick Christian@1:2320/100 to All on Mon Nov 14 04:40:02 2016

    Hello everybody!

Since getting a new kitty... I am looking over some of the various pet health insurance plans...

Any one had any experience with these?? Ones they like, dislike, or other comments...

    Thanks.

I've looked at them once or twice but the ones I have seen just read so much like scams. IDK. Very leery about them at this point. I would also be interested in hearing from someone that has used them.

Not here... I agree, what I've seen read like scams. Most people around here take their animals to Ithaca's Cornell University Veterinary college - quite an excellent reputation. I'm not even sure they would accept insurance.

None of these work the way human insurance works,

These are all plans where YOU PAY FIRST, submit a claim and then you are reimbursed based on chosen deductible and coverage amount.. ie 90% coverage, with a $100 deductible, means you pay 10% after the $100 deductible.

I have two that offer discounts via employment

    Nationwide
    ASPCA Pet Insurance

A third got a "Best" rating by people that are unknown to me...
    Healthypaws Insurance

NONE of these are cheap... $50/month/cat

Some offer UNLIMITED LIFETIME coverage, some have lifetime limits...

Just would love to have input from people versus unknown possibly fake "ratings" from groups or sites online.

    Ouch...

Over the years we've had a few kitties that cost a fortune in vet bills.. one was attacked by a rabid squirrel.. our cat won the fight though but had to have his jaw wired and extensive surgery... that was an expensive event! but we survived and so did the cat.. he lived a long time after that, to about 17 years IIRC.

Know what you mean... sometimes I get the feeling that say someone's family involved in the insurance company or what ever is being reviewed is making all the positive comments :)

    Take care,
    Janis

I have purchased it once... and discontinued it when my kitty had liver failure. One of my kitties stopped eating and started vomiting up yellow plhem. WHen I took him to the vet the pet health insurance paid for all the labs that it needed but because there was a 95% chance that he would not make it through they refused to pay for the hospitalization or the iv fluds and stuff he needed. Since I was a former paramedic and I was working at the time I decided to take on the challenge and between me and my mother we began force feeding him the A/D food and giving IV fluids twice a day. After three weeks of this he started eating and put on weight. He lived anothe rtwo years after that and the pet insurance cancelled him. I kept the female on the insurance and she ened up getting kitty breast cancer. Again they only offered to pay for the euthanasia. At this time I reviewed it with my vet and she said Priscilla would live another 6 months with a decent quality of life. I
treated her for 6 months and then we had to let her go as it became apparent that she would not get better. There was a surgical option that would have removed the tumors and possibly gave her a year or two more... but the insruance would not pay for that.

All I have to say is get everything in writing. What they will and will not pay... make sure you can use your vet of choice. Don't do ANYTHING without
    any written specifics.

$50 a month is a lot of money per cat per month... I would set up a savings account and deposit the $50 a month in it. Most kitties I have had did not have health problems till they were 7 years old or more.

On that average $50 a month is $600 a year in 7 years time with interest that would be more than $4200 which is quite a bit and will go quite a long way since Vetrinary procedures are a fraction of what they cost for humans.

I've even had kitties that lived 13-14 years before any health problems.

Seriously IF you get it don't depend on the reimbursement there will always be some fine print or a "gotcha" clause. Plus a $100 occurance deductable is
very high considering the cost of vetrinary care vs human care.

    Just sayin

It would be helpful if you can specify which one of the carriers it was.

    Thanks.

I got it through our work discount portal... I think it may have been called VPI back then but I googled it and it's now Nationwide Insurance or something similar to that. It's been a long time. I am involved in animal rescure and two of my best friends are veterinarians. They make commissions if they are sold in thier offices and refuse to sell pet insurance. I could ask them why (taking kitties in for shots on Tuesday next week.) I know that when both of my kitties got sick the prognosis was not good... I have heard that they have paid for accidents, broken bones, surgeries like anal gland infections that
got out of control and things like that. All of those surgeries were less
than what you would pay for a year to a year and a half of the pet insurance.

http://www.petinsurancereview.com/ is a site that really touts them... but
when I read that a pet had a vet bill of $1000 that only cost them $500 and
the insurance is $50 a month to the tune of $600 a year... that really didn't save them anything. Think of it this way if the bill was $1000 and they pay $600 a year for the insurance putting that in a savings account they would
only have had to pay $400 for the difference and they paid $500? They paid $100 more it's simple math.

Slug the money away in a savings account and don't touch it. In three years you have a $1800 emergency fund for your pet. In 4 you have $2400, 5 you have $2800 actually more due to interest. If the pet lives 7 years before you need it then you have quite a bit of money for their medical care.

The secret is knowing you would have spent that on insurance ANYHOW and don't touch it. No matter what happens don't touch it! And it will be there when you need it.
