• Annoying cat behavior

From Allen Prunty@1:2320/100 to All on Wed Jun 1 04:22:02 2016
What can I do to stop a cat from coming up to me and if I ignore her she
bites me? The cat thinks she is a "human" baby. I bottle fed her from
a kitten and she wants to be constantly held.

If I ignore her she bites... Getting old... I don't want to swat at her
    or ruin our trust.

    Hello Allen.

Is the biting an agressive angry type biting or a more passive type biting?

Could be several causes. Sometimes cats show affection in biting and nibbling on a person's hands, fingers, toes, etc. I had a cat that was like that. She would bite, actually nibble and sometimes add a rather gentle hug with her paws (Including claws). Not really painful though. The biting never seeming to be in anger.

If the cat is actively seeks attention the cat can use biting as an attention getter by saying in essince pay attention to me. Having had such a intimate bonding relationship as a kitten. The cat may have a higher than average need for attention or is used to a higher attention level.

Try to ignore the behavior you dont want. Also try to provide other outlets for the cats energy and attention and try to give attention to the cat when the cat is quiet and acting appropriately.

Alternatively some cats seem to have a rather low level of impatience. If they want
to be petted they may only want to be petted a certain amount and use biting to make
it clear that they wish the person to stop.

Is the cat spayed or fixed? Sometimes that makes a difference in how needy a cat is.
Unfixed cats can be kind of pushy for attention.

With other cats it might be more a matter of a personality issue or the cat could
actually be exhibiting a mild case of bipolar behaviour. Where the cat seemd warm and
loving one moment and aggressive the next. In which case it might require the aid of a
    behavioural expert.

One of our two calico's does this all the time to me... drives me crazy.

Sometimes she circles my feet, say when I'm getting ready for bed, and ZAP bites me for no apparent reason... (reminds me of a land-shark hahaha)

Ron says she did the same thing to him until he swatted back at her (eh, not forcefully, I'd imagine <g>) and she stopped doing that to him. I just can't do that... so I I try telling her "NO Lola!" and she does stop. For a while :)

Maybe I should take her to a Kitty-Shrink ? Lol... No way, as getting her in the car is such a disaster!

I was really hoping someone had some ideas as to WHY some cats do this. Her sister does not... Lulu, her sister, is really a more laid back kitty and just likes to lay around when she's not outside hunting. Of course, Lulu is the one that keeps bringing her catches (or parts of them, I should say...) eeew...

    Take care,

Yes, you have another Land-shark, just like we have... I'm sure of it now :)

Lola, our biter, understands "NO!" very well... you can see it in her face when you scold her. You can often see her reaction to it very clearly as well "STUFF IT MOM" :)

I don't have a land shark... I have a jet black mini-panther. She definately has the hunting instinct. She hasn't killed anything (yet) but she's brought me a couple of her stuffed toys with the cotton filling hanging out of their belly's.

Don't know if you remember but we used to breed siamese cats. Had some grand show champions too. Several of the local sysops here got some of our babies not sure if you got one or not. Siamese are a curious breed, but their behavior is kind of predictable. This is a rescue kitty she is a little bit... um... different.

Siamese cats are very neat, Mom had one when I was growing up. I did not remember that you raised them. That's neat.

Our two kitties are also rescue kitties... they were feral when found in the wild in Ithaca, and they really still are. We tried to make them regular house cats, but they will have no part of that. You still cannot pick them up to get them to the vet, for instance, without risking losing a finger or hand <grin>.. but I love them anyway :)

Hmm... I've heard that doesn't work with kids, not sure why it might
    work with cats hahaha

because biting is one of the ways that they communucate... the same with swatting at them... mine out here will swat at each other when they look at each other sideways or when they are playing tag and chase in the yard... it is kinda like my dogs... when we go out to the shop, they will come up and take our hand in their mouth to go with us to the shop door... some people think they are trying to bite them until we explain that a dog's mouth is like our hand... they just want to hold your hand... back to the cats, some biting is easy and gentle... some is nipping while other is holding on and biting hard... it is just they way they are trying to communicate... once you figure out what they want when they do that, everything will be fine... but if it is hard biting, it wil take time for them to understand that it is too hard for the human and that's where swats come in... not a hard swat but just something on their nose or side to say "don't do that"...

I bet my land-shark kitty would just plan her attacks on my feet
    better Lol

i've got several here that bit when they want attention or are feeling good... two of them lick me all the time when they are happy... another one will swat, hiss and attack if you do something to her that she doesn't like...

hehe.. that is true Mark... I'd bet they tell each other to get lost with those swats, etc. that I've seen. Lulu is a longer, larger cat than her sister Lola.. and Lola is always walking around with a nose that looks like it just got a swat to the tip of her nose from Lulu's long front legs ...

    it i
kinda like my dogs... when we go out to the shop, they will come up and take our hand in their mouth to go with us to the shop door... some people think they are trying to bite them until we explain that a dog's mouth is like our hand... they just want to hold your hand...

Lol, I'm laughing because yes, my two pups do that as well... Indy especially. Not always, but often enough, anywhere I go in the house, Indy will come over to me as I'm walking and take a hand. I figure he's just making sure he knows where I'm going <grin>

back to the cats, some biting is
easy and gentle... some is nipping while other is holding on and biting hard.. >it is just they way they are trying to communicate... once you figure out what

Yep, I can see that. I'll give it a try. :)

These two feral cats are very healthy, that's for sure. I have feeling they both would like us to get rid of the dogs, and each of these cats would like to be "the only cat" :)

    Ain't gonna happen <grin>

    Catnip works thank goodness... :)

My last cat was kinda like that. Very rarely did I ever see her mad. Except when she was protecting here territory form other cats and some dogs. Towards people I never saw here mad. She just had the way of showing affection by nibbling and hugging (With some claws).

Mine would show her desire for attention while I was on a computer by walking across the keyboard or sitting right in front of the monitor.

Same here with just tad of white on her upper chest. Not a great mouser though. She would play with them until she was bored. Which usually meant that the mouse's life energy had ceased.

Hence the term Cat and Mouse. I have a lot of these little lizards that are gold lizards with shiny blue tails. I am told they are called "Five Line Skinks" by KY's dept of fish and wildlife. I often find them expired in the living room where they squeeze in. Some with the tail some without the tail.
I just look at my cats and ask them if it tasted like chicken.

Mom's horrified because we do have copperheads in the creek and woods behind my house. She said if the lizards can squeeze under the door so can the snakes.

I've tried replacing the rubber strip on the bottom but it quickly peels and disintegrates after a month or two. So far nothing bad has happened. A friend said the scent of my kitties should keep the bad things away, the little skinks don't know any better and they are plentiful. If you move a flowerpot from my porch dozens of them will crawl out from under it.

I think they are pretty... Jade and Annie make the biggest noises when one gets in the house. I'm here all the time and I can usually rescue the poor critter before it meets it's demise now.

    Ian

I actually did that once. I was playing with our male cat, He was 2 or 3 at the time (he was 14.5 years old when he died) He was up on the top of the
cat trerr at head level with me and he was getting too rough, and I don't
know what possesed me, but I gave him a light bite on the leg to make a
point. (no where near as hard as he was biting me at the time) Not enough to hurt him, just enough to hold for a moment. He was so surprised... I got a mouth full of cat hair.

He was a great cat. As he got older, he became the most gental cat you could want. In fact I rarely even trimmed his claws because he never scratched me even when playing hard, he would smack with his paw, but no claws:)

Ordered Chinese takeout and I had eaten most of my eggroll set it down on the coffee table to answer the phone. Hi Miranda,

Jade kitty has been broken of the biting, but since she was bottle fed she >> wants to be held constantly. I miss her... (not sure how I would like her >> snuggled up to my shingles... but Aunt Dolores said she's is crying looking >> for me.

She was the defiant one of the litter for sure. I know you probably have some >stories about that one. Something about the jet black kitties they all have a
extra dose of attitude to make up for being all the same color.

I agree there.. we had a jet black kitty.. I named her umm.. Kitty. Lol. She didn't need a special name... she was "all attitude" :) :)

    Take care,
    Janis

    Hi Allen,

Jade has been the biggest blessing in my life... until she stole my eggroll
last night. Ordered Chinese takeout and I had eaten most of my eggroll set it >down on the coffee table to answer the phone. Looked and it was gone... heard >lips smacking looked in the kitchen and it was DEVOURED... all that cabbage in
it made interesting trumpet noises last night (yes cats can fart) what am I going to do with her.

Oh my.. I could expect that from my dummy lab-mix pups.. but if our kitties stole food I'm afraid I'd laugh too much to get serious with them.. we have two

kitties here.. one is money colored and the other is classic calico.. I still miss my jet black kitty. She caught something and was gone in a few days. It was really sad for all of us when it happened. My vet thought it was some type

of feline aids that got her.. we'll never though since no autopsy was done.

    Very sad situation though..

    Take care,
    Janis

Jade is the most hyper cat I've ever owned... she's hiding tonight because of the bad thunderstorm. I joke because she moves like a huntress... I tell everyoen she's an exotic "Mini-Panther".

Anytime there's eating to be done she's under your feet. If I cooking there she is. I can't even do dishes without her being ever present. And GOD help you if you fix bacon.... she loves bacon.

That is really funny :) I don't think I've ever had a kitty that liked bacon :)

Over here, these two love treats and will hound you for more if they think you've got them :)
