A Turkish Airlines flight from Seattle to Istanbul had to divert to New York last night because the captain suddenly became ill. He died before landing. The other pilots safely landed the Airbus A350.

Ilcehin Pehlivan, the 59-year-old captain, quickly lost consciousness. The exact cause has not yet been announced. A routine health check earlier this year revealed nothing unusual. The crew tried to revive him, but to no avail.

The incident happened on flight TK204. Turkish Airlines has expressed its condolences to Pehlivan's family and colleagues. Replacement transportation is being arranged for the passengers.

The Airbus A350 was flying over the cold and empty north-east of Canada when it was decided to divert to New York.
