    It's one of the standard American sit-com rules - the father is almost
    always dumb, the mother more intelligent than him (not necessarily actually intelligent though), etc. It's the same in both animated shows (The Flintstones) and live-action shows (Rodney), as well as many shows where
    they aren't married (Get Smart).

    Of course, it's really based on the average American family, who are also
    dumb as stumps. ;-)
    (And in the case of The Simpsons, they also have the average 2.5 children)

    The same rule often occurs in British comedy shows as well.
