Not sure anyone's listening given that this
conversation took place six years ago. When my ADSL service crapped out I did switch to Comcast
for around US$ 30/month (by that time we had also switched to cable television from satellite). I was with Comcast for a few years but just recently there have been times when their "3M" service would drop to around 50k downstream, which stops some things working.

So here I am switching back to AT&T ($46+ehft)
because they're still the only other wired option. They no longer offer ADSL service so I had to buy a VDSL modem/router. I was irritated that they shipped
me a used one but this evening I was able to get it working. I think it says something about how solid the Cable/Telco duopoly is that they're still the only two wired options here.

    Hi Andy,

You apparantly don't have cable in your

There is, but it's Comcast so it's horribly
expensive and we're not cable television
subscribers, so that would further add to
    the monthly cost.

Here in this part of NY, just 10 minutes from Ithaca, NY, the only show in town

Yes... insane... over here, when we moved in last year in March I think, Ron had to go to their office and pick up the tv boxes.. and they were used as well.. and one of them didn't work so he had to get another.. the modem at least worked though <g>. They did send guys here to install the modem. Of course the previous owner of the house had everything in place from HIS TWCable
    connection <g>

    Take care,
    Janis

I'm glad you do. :-D Last night I was finally able to
get the VDSL working. I went outside with a screwdriver and a flashlight and switched the polarity of the pair from the house at the network interface box.
